Portugal is located on the west coast of the Iberian Peninsula, in southwestern Europe. Portugal has an area of 35,556 sq mi (92,090 sq km) and a population (2009 est.) of about 10,639,000.
The capital is Lisbon, visible here on the shores of the Tagus River estuary by the lower left edge. Portugal is divided roughly in half by the Tagus River; the highlands rise mostly north of the Tagus and stretch northeast into Spain.
