Spain, one of Europe’s largest countries, is located in southwestern Europe on the Iberian Peninsula and also includes the Balearic and Canary islands.

Spain has an area of 195,364 sq mi (505,991 sq km) and a population (2009 est.) of around 46,059,000. The capital is Madrid, visible upon opening the full image as a gray area northeast of the center. Located on the central plateau of the Iberian Peninsula, 2,100 ft (635 m) above sea level, it is one of Europe’s highest capitals.

Spain is organized into autonomous communities; each has its own regional customs, and three of them—Catalonia, Galicia, and the Basque Country – have their own official language. Languages include Castilian Spanish (official), Catalan, Galician and Basque.
