Spain - June 21st, 2011

This image stretches across the Iberian Peninsula, located in the extreme southwest of Europe, which includes the modern-day sovereign states of Spain (occupying the majority of the image), Portugal (by the west coast) and Andorra, as well as the British Overseas Territory of Gibraltar.

The Pyrenees form the northeast edge of the peninsula, separating it from the rest of Europe. Part of France can be seen north of these mountains in the upper right corner.

In the south, the peninsula approaches the northern coast of Africa. Part of the Strait of Gibraltar can be seen here, between the two continents, although Gibraltar itself is obscured by clouds.

Of interest on the west coast is the city of Lisbon, in Portugal, on the estuary of the Tagus River (both best observed in the full image).
